Description

Whispering Pines begins not with a mold or a computer drawing, but with a piece of wood in the hands of artist Lori Miller. Lori conceives each character and carves the original design from sugar pine, developing the elongated silhouettes, flowing beards, simple faces and wonderfully irregular details that give her work its distinctive personality. Molds are then created from those original carvings so they can be reproduced in hand-painted resin, preserving the appearance and texture of Lori's wood-carved originals while making her designs available to collectors.

Santa Claus is at the heart of the Whispering Pines collection, but Lori rarely interprets him exactly the same way twice. Tall pencil Santas stand beside rounder gift givers and whimsical figures carrying lanterns, stars, doves, wreaths, trees and banners bearing familiar Christmas sentiments. Traditional red robes mingle with woodland greens and softly aged antique whites, while twigs, dried naturals, wire, bells, raffia and other accents reinforce the rustic character of the collection. Some designs recall Old World Santa and Father Christmas figures, while others have an unmistakably American folk art simplicity.

Whispering Pines Santas are particularly effective when collected in groups. Mixing tall, slender figures with shorter Santas creates movement across a mantel, shelf or tabletop, while repeating red, green and antique white throughout the display keeps the different shapes connected. Bottle brush trees, natural greenery, wooden decorations and other rustic Christmas décor make fitting companions. Beyond Christmas, Lori's snowmen, pilgrims, rabbits, patriotic characters and occasional Halloween designs allow collectors to enjoy the carved Whispering Pines style during other seasons as well.

Why Buy Whispering Pines from Traditions?

Whispering Pines is the kind of collection that becomes more interesting once you understand how it begins. The resin figures aren't simply made to resemble wood carvings; each design originates with Lori Miller carving the character herself in sugar pine. Knowing that process makes the carved textures, unusual proportions and small artistic details throughout the finished pieces even more meaningful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Whispering Pines figures hand carved?

Lori Miller hand carves the original Whispering Pines designs from sugar pine. Molds are then created from her carvings, and the collectible versions are reproduced in resin and hand painted. This process allows the finished figures to retain the distinctive shapes, textures and folk art character of Lori's original wood carvings while making each design available to more collectors.

How do I collect and display Whispering Pines Santas?

One of the most appealing ways to collect Whispering Pines is to mix Santa shapes and sizes while repeating a favorite color palette. Tall pencil Santas can add height behind smaller figures, while wider Santas create visual anchors throughout a mantel or tabletop. Red creates a traditional Christmas display, green works beautifully with woodland décor, and antique white has a quieter Old World feeling. Mixing all three can also create the appearance of a collection gathered over many Christmases.

What decorations coordinate well with Whispering Pines?

The carved appearance and earthy personality of Whispering Pines work naturally with rustic and traditional Christmas décor. Bottle brush trees, natural greenery, pinecones, wooden ornaments and antique-inspired decorations complement Lori Miller's Santas without overwhelming them. Collectors who enjoy Old World Santa and Father Christmas figures can also mix those styles with Whispering Pines, using natural textures and repeated colors to connect the different collections.
