Description
There may be no character more immediately connected with Thanksgiving than the turkey. With a magnificent fan of tail feathers and rich autumn coloring, even a fairly realistic turkey already looks dressed for the occasion. Give artists permission to have a little fun, however, and suddenly turkeys are wearing top hats, sitting on pumpkins, carrying harvest baskets and showing considerably more personality than anyone expected from the bird originally invited to dinner.
Thanksgiving turkey décor ranges from traditional to delightfully eccentric. Some figures celebrate the bird's natural form with detailed feathers and warm shades of brown, rust, cream and gold. Others borrow from vintage holiday decorations, transforming turkeys into expressive paper mâché characters, candy containers and glittered collectibles. Soft fabric turkeys bring a cozy folk art quality to the season, while ceramic, resin, wood and plaster designs offer everything from rustic farmhouse looks to more elegant Thanksgiving displays.
Materials can make two turkeys feel completely different. Meadowbrooke Gourds uses natural gourds, felt, wood and raffia to create handcrafted birds whose shapes are influenced by the gourds themselves. Bethany Lowe Designs explores vintage-inspired Thanksgiving through hand painted paper mâché, paper pulp and resin, while Rags A. Muffin Junction creates wonderfully eccentric fabric turkeys using repurposed textiles, feathers and other mixed materials. Cody Foster, Gerson Companies, Transpac and Gallerie II add still more interpretations, from richly detailed traditional birds to gilded, glittered and whimsical designs.
Turkeys make natural focal points for Thanksgiving decorating. Place one larger bird at the center of a mantel, buffet or sideboard and surround it with pumpkins, gourds, autumn foliage and smaller harvest accents. A pair of turkeys can frame a centerpiece, while miniature birds tuck easily among place settings and tabletop arrangements. Because the motif belongs so specifically to Thanksgiving, adding just one or two turkeys can also transform a general autumn display into something that feels ready for the holiday.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I decorate with Thanksgiving turkey figures?
Let a larger turkey become the focal point of a mantel, sideboard or tabletop arrangement, then surround it with pumpkins, gourds, leaves, berries and other harvest accents. Smaller turkey figures can be grouped together or tucked into an existing autumn display. Varying the heights and materials keeps multiple birds from feeling repetitive.
Can turkey decorations work throughout the fall season?
Yes, although turkeys give a display a more specifically Thanksgiving feeling than pumpkins and general harvest décor. Start the season with pumpkins, gourds and autumn foliage, then add turkey figures as Thanksgiving approaches. This is an easy way to update a fall arrangement without completely redecorating it.
What materials are Thanksgiving turkey decorations made from?
The collection includes turkeys made from natural gourds, paper mâché, paper pulp, resin, ceramic, plaster, wood, fabric, felt, metal and mixed materials such as feathers and raffia. Construction varies significantly between artists and makers, so individual product descriptions are the best source for specific materials and care information.
