An Old World Christmas glass hanging bird ornament. The Dodo bird is an extinct bird that used to inhabit the Mauritius island in the Indian Ocean. Because there were no other predators to this bird on the island, it evolved to become a flightless species that lived and nested on the ground and ate fruits that fell from the trees. The plump grey bird with white feathers had a sad fate, becoming the poster bird for extinction and the inspiration for the expression, "dead as a dodo."
